The Permanent Representation of Italy to the International Organizations in Paris organized the webinar Energy and climate in the energy transition: the Italian and international context in the perspective of the G20 and COP26, to present the important report of the IEA “Net Zero by 2050: a Roadmap for the Global Energy Sector” focused on a viable action plan to decarbonize the global energy sector and achieve the goal of zero emissions by 2050.
The event, opened by the Permanent Representative to the international organizations, Ambassador Bernardini, was attended by the Executive Director of the IEA Fatih Birol and by The Minister for Sustainable Infrastructure and Mobility, Enrico Giovannini.
In its opening remarks Mr. Birol summarized the roadmap that awaits the energy sector in two phases: a first – in which we will focus on a strong push on existing clean technologies – and a second – in which we must focus on new technologies in development and not yet on the market – with an important task for research and development.
Minister Giovannini, stressed that this action plan requires an unprecedented transformation with decisive implications for the economic, social and productive system. He also stated that new metrics must be developed to calculate and model investments and outcomes of the transformation, in order to truly understand it and be able to make the right strategic choices, also in addressing individual behaviors: a key aspect for the transition.
With a dense and concise speech Laura Cozzi, Chief Energy Modeller of the International Energy Agency, summarized the essential lines of the report: between technologies, necessary development phases, new jobs in the clean energy sector, investments, challenges and complexities but also unprecedented economic opportunities.
The event, moderated by Sissi Bellomo, from Sole24Ore, was followed by an interesting round table involving the main stakeholders of the Italian energy and infrastructure sector. The speakers were: the President of the National Research Council (CNR), Maria Chiara Carrozza, the CEO of SNAM, Marco Alverà, the CEO and President of ENEL Italia S.p.A., Carlo Tamburi, the General Manager of FINCANTIERI, Fabio Gallia, the Public Affairs Director of ENI, Lapo Pistelli.
