The three-day visit to Italy of the Director of the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), Monique Eloit, kicks off today. HIV, SARS, Ebola and Covid-19 are all diseases of animal origin that have placed the organization at the center of initiatives against the pandemic in collaboration with WHO and FAO. The meetings aim to strengthen the collaboration between Italy and the Organization given the increasingly close links between human and animal health. Monique Eloit was invited by the Italian government and the European Commission to participate in the G20 Global Health Summit. During his stay in Italy, a visit to the Teramo Zooprophylactic Institute, a center of excellence in the veterinary field, and the inauguration in Palermo of the Mediterranean Network of Animal Health (REMESA), an important initiative aimed at improve collaboration in the veterinary sector with coastal countries. The visit will end on Wednesday with meetings with the Minister of Health, Roberto Speranza: Italy is one of the few countries in the world that has adopted a unified approach to human and animal health issues. In the meetings at the Farnesina with the Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs, Manlio Di Stefano, the prospects for international collaboration in African countries will be examined. Eloit will be accompanied by the Permanent Representative of Italy to the International Organizations in Paris, Ambassador Antonio Bernardini.
