International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies
Founded in 1962, the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies is a Mediterranean intergovernmental organization composed of 13 member states (Albania, Algeria, Egypt, Spain, France, Greece, Italy, Lebanon, Malta, Morocco, Portugal, Tunisia and Turkey). CIHEAM operates through the General Secretariat based in Paris and four Institutes based in Bari, Chania, Montpellier and Zaragoza, respectively.. (CIHEAM-Bari, CIHEAM-Chania, CIHEAM-Montpellier e CIHEAM-Saragozza).
Active in multilateral cooperation in the fields of sustainable agriculture and fisheries, food systems and coastal and rural development, CIHEAM carries out initiatives in the fields of education and training, research and the creation of open platforms for learning and dissemination of knowledge, technical assistance and political dialogue and partnership. These activities are carried out taking into account the four main pillars established in PACMED 2025, the strategic agenda adopted during the 2016 ministerial Council meeting:
- Protection of the planet, by combating waste of food, natural resources, knowledge and know-how;
- Food and nutritional security, by promoting sustainable agriculture and food systems;
- Inclusive development by investing in new generations and fragile territories;
- Prevention of crises by contributing to the management of tensions and working for the resilience of communities.

- Teodoro Miano Board of Directors: composed of a representative from each of the Member States, it is the management body of the Organization.
- Representatives of the OECD and the Council of Europe are ex officio members and sit on it in an advisory capacity.
- Consultative Committee: expresses opinions at the request of the Board of Directors.
Italy has a representative on the Board of Directors and on the Consultative Committee and participates in the work of the Organization also through the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Bari, whose Director General is Maurizio Raeli. The competent national authority is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation – Directorate General for Development Cooperation
