The International Energy Agency’s 29 member countries – including Italy -Mexico, invited as the 30th member, seven Association countries, other partners, as well as more than 30 large energy companies, met in Paris this week for the IEA’s 2017 Ministerial Meeting, under the theme “Bolstering energy security for sustainable global growth.”
It provided a unique opportunity for governments and industry to discuss major energy issues: investments, markets, innovation, digitalization. The meeting allowed IEA countries to review steps the agency should take to extend its modernization mandate, in the field of energy security, opening the agency’s doors to emerging countries, and energy transition.
Two events were also held centred around the ministerial meeting: the first on women in clean energy, intended to promote women’s participation in the energy sector, on which Ambassador Busacca presented Italian commitments and actions; the second to launch the IEA Clean Energy Transitions Programme, intended to leverage the IEA’s expertise to accelerate global clean-energy transitions in developing countries, joined by 13 members including Italy.
The IEA family now accounts for more than 70% of global energy consumption.
